Great Summer Read Selection #2: YA Edition
Punkzilla by Adam Rapp
If you're afraid of some real-life grit (read: some drug/sex references), then I'd like to offer a warning: this book is gritty.
With that being said, I'm still recommending it because of the incredible character - Punkzilla - created by author, Adam Rapp. Jamie Wyckoff, a 14-year-old pre-pubescent boy constantly living in the shadow of his perfect older brother, Edward, and under the thumb of his militant father, The Major, is sent to military school in Portland in an attempt to curb his recent destructive behavior. Jamie (a.k.a. Punkzilla) finds out in a letter that his oldest brother is dying of cancer in Memphis, and goes AWOL in an attempt to hitchhike across the country to see him before he dies. The story maps his travels across the country with the manipulation and salvation he receives from strangers along the way.
