The Analytical Writing Assessment of the GMAT
The GMAT begins with an Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), which requires you to write 2 essays. It evaluates your ability to develop complex, coherent, focused essays based on sound reasoning and good communication.
The first essay is referred to as "Analysis of an Issue," and asks you to present your perspective on an issue. You will have 30 minutes to develop an essay that explains and justifies your point of view.
The second essay, referred to as "Analysis of an Argument," asks you to critique the reasoning behind an argument. You will have 30 minutes to write an analysis of a passage that evaluates whether it presents a logical argument, whether its reasoning is sound, and whether further evidence is needed to support the conclusion.
