The Bottom Line

This book offers an interesting and entertaining journey through 30 days' worth of important vocabulary words and practice drills, and you'll find yourself wanting to do more than 1 daily lesson per day.
Pros
  • The vocabulary is relevant. You'll encounter these words on standardized tests.
  • The lessons are manageable - so no excuses for procrastinators!
  • The price is right. You can find old and used editions for a few quarters.
Cons
  • A few of the words are dated.

Description

  • Consists of 30 lessons designed for daily learning over the course of one month
  • Plan to spend 15-20 minutes on each daily lesson
  • In publication since 1942, so it must be good!

Guide Review - 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary

Are you weak in vocab? If you're preparing for a standardized test that has a vocabulary or reading component, you can greatly improve your scores through daily practice. Skip the dry word lists and start with Funk and Lewis' 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary.

It offers a fun way to learn and practice important vocabulary words that often show up on standardized tests. While the language occasionally seems a bit dated (the book hasn't changed much since the original 1942 edition!), the vocabulary remains pertinent and the methodology of presenting new words is, in my opinion, unmatched on the market.

If you regularly spend 15-20 minutes on each daily lesson over the course of a month, you'll learn 10-20 new thematically connected words each day, and the book provides plentiful opportunities for drilling them into your memory. No one vocabulary book will cover all the words you need to know, but in my opinion, this is one of the best places to start - no matter what test you're planning to take.

Plus, you can't beat the cost of finding an old copy for a few quarters at a used bookstore or online!
