The GRE Computer-Based General Test

From About.com

What is the GRE Computer-Based General Test?: The GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is a standardized test required for application to most graduate schools. The computer-based format contains 3 sections, including multiple-choice questions and 2 essays. The GRE is not a test of specific subject material; it is designed to evaluate the verbal, quantitative, and critical thinking skills that you should have developed throughout your education.
Who Takes It?: Everyone applying to graduate school will need to take the GRE. Testers in the US and Canada will always take the GRE in computer-based format.
What Subjects Does it Cover?: The GRE isn't a test of the subjects you learned in college - it is meant to evaluate general academic skills that should have been developed over the course of your education. It contains three sections that test your writing, math, and verbal skills. The writing section requires you to write 2 essays on specific topics, and will always come first.
How Long is It?: For GRE testers who take the self-paced computer-based test, the testing time varies according to their pace. Overall, the test may take up to 3 hours including a 30-minute essay, 45-minute essay, 30 minute Verbal section, and 45-minute Math section. Sometimes an ungraded research section increases the time.
How Long Do I Need to Prepare?: This is a very personal decision, depending on the amount of time you can set aside and your current level of test-taking ability. Take a practice test as soon as possible to gauge your current ability and identify weak areas. Even if you do very well, you should be sure to review the relevant math concepts and thoroughly understand the test directions and format. Everyone should spend significant time looking at the possible essay topics (ETS provides a list of all of the possibilities!).
When Should I Take It?: Application deadlines vary, so check with the graduate schools you're considering. At many universities, GRE scores need to be submitted by April for admission and by January to be considered for fellowships. International students have earlier deadlines. It's always a good idea to test early so that you can re-test if necessary. The computer-based test is flexible in that you can set your own dates, and can re-test once per month up to 5 times each year. Scores will go out after about 2 weeks.
