Praxis II: Subject Assessments
Many states require Praxis II tests for teaching certification as a supplement to the Praxis I, because they provide a broader picture of your knowledge of specific subjects and educational practices and philosophies. You can find out which tests are required for your area of teaching certification from your state department of education.
There is a wide variety of Praxis II tests. The Subject Assessments measure knowledge of the specific subject area that you intend to teach. The Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests evaluate knowledge of educational practices used for different schooling levels, specifically for Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, and High School education. The Teaching Foundations Tests evaluate knowledge of educational practices used for different academic subjects, namely English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and elementary-level multi-subject instruction.
Praxis II tests are paper-based, and are either 1, 2, or 4 hours long. You can take up to 3 of them per test date, as long as they fit within the schedule of offerings. But keep in mind that a long day of testing may exhaust you and affect your ability to score well.
