Test Prep Tasty Tidbit: Curving a Grade

If you just got a test back and received a score that doesn't match what you believe you should have earned based on the rubric, then ask your teacher if she graded your test on a curve. In general, "grading on a curve" is the term used for a variety of different methods of adjusting a test grade in some way. Most of the time, this type of grading boosts the students grade by moving his or her actual percentage up a few notches or boosting the letter grade. Sometimes, though, this method of grading can be irritating to students because some kids' grades can be adjusted at a higher percentage than others depending on the method used to curve.

If your test seems at odds with the perameters discussed before you tested, then perhaps your teacher simply graded on a curve. Or, she made a mistake.

Either way, it's in your best interest to bring it up!
